Traditional gospel
Last verse lyrics by Wade Baynham
Created as part of a communal response with the Poor People's Campaign
I first heard this song when the Poor People's Campaign shared an old Smithsonian recording of Fannie Lou Hamer singing it during the American Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 60s, and they asked people to share their own versions as part of their movement for moral revival in America, last year.
I clearly don't have a voice anything like Ms. Hamer, and her version is so powerful that I wondered how I could possibly lend my voice and musical skills to this project. But as I worked on recording the music and singing the lyrics of this great old traditional song, I felt the longing in my own heart for the Kingdom of God to be realized, here and now, 'up over my head' and all around us, in my life, in my bones-- in all of our lives.
And I continue to be aware that God isn't working by waving a magic wand over the earth-- clearly! But He is working in and through His creation and the people who want to participate, people who want to be people sharing God's blessing with the world-- peace people, justice people, mercy people, love people, mourning people, people who love truth, people who speak truth to power, people who sacrifice, people who help set prisoners free.
I hear pain and hope and weakness and strength woven all together in this song. I hear it as a cry of hope for 'setting the captives free' in the midst of our everyday pain and suffering. My prayer is that it will encourage all who want to join in this great life and work.
Happy Easter
lyrics
Up over my head I hear music in the air
I really do believe music's coming 'round here
Up over my head I see freedom in the air
I really do believe freedom's coming 'round here
Up over my head I see justice in the air
All over my head I see justice in the air
I really do believe Heaven's coming 'round here
Up over my head...
