Music and Lyrics by Wade Baynham Seeing You in Me I see you in me I see the things you fear; I’m afraid too I see when you fall; I’ve fallen too I see what you’re thinking; I feel crazy too I see you in me I see your hurts; I’m hurting too I see your tears; I’m crying too I see your smile; I’m smiling too I see you’re growing; I’m growing too I see you in me I see you in me Why’s it so hard to admit, we share so much-- have much in common Our differences aren’t so great, as they might first seem I see you in me I see your shame; I’m ashamed too I see your blame; I blame too I see you feel trapped; I want to be free too I see you’re human; I’m human too Then I can’t see you; you’re hiding from me, I’m hiding from you Come out, come out, it’s ok; it’ll be alright Let’s do this together; take off the masks We’ll lay our hearts bare; it’ll hurt for a while It’ll sting and then... it will stop I see you in me I see your defenses; I’m defended too I see you’re a skeptic; I’m skeptical too I see that you’re trying; I’m trying too I see that you’re stepping toward me; I’m stepping toward you I see you in me I see you in me I see you See you in me

about

Seeing You in Me. I see you.... in me. I see You in Me. Unless I don't. Unless I won't. Unless I can't. God, I need help with this...

These are some of the thoughts I have had over this past year. As I have reflected on news from home and around the world, I have asked myself, why do some people feel they way they do. I can't relate to some people's views. I don't know how to relate... I don't know if I want to, or if I can. But our divisions and our hatred and our tribalism and our 'us vs. them' seem so destructive. They’ve been so destructive throughout history, and humans seem to learn the hard way. I know from my own experiences learning the hard way. These thoughts and feelings have been very humbling to me.

I started to ask what my part or contribution to this divide might be, as I began to feel these feelings in me over a year ago. And I began to wonder what my response might be. I started to look through some of my favorite songs, where the songwriter told their story-- where their story was very different than mine, but where somehow I could relate strongly to their experience and the vulnerability. I started living with the songs and singing the lyrics as my own, with open hands and as much compassion as I could feel for their story and my own. I kept finding that vulnerability, openness, honesty and the willingness to share had a very significant part in all of these songs.

I hope you can listen to ‘Seeing You in Me,’ and hear the musical fruit of my last year living with and working on these songs. Many of these songs have been in my consciousness for years, but they have come alive again for me in new ways during this recording project. I hope that if you live with them a while, you might start to ask the question 'Can I see you in me?' God help us see who and what we can't see.
