I have very much appreciated the idea I read from Bill Wilson that the two keys that turn every spiritual lock are humility and willingness. But vulnerability and being ‘uncovered’ as a part of that journey are seriously challenging paths to enter. I can’t do it my own. I can’t even sniff it. I’ve needed help and encouragement and community; and too, I’ve had to be at the end of my own abilities and resources to even consider going this way. It feels like death, and in a way, it is a death to ‘hanging on’ to my way of doing everything-- a death of my will. Interestingly, as I’ve tried to turn my will over to God, as best I can understand, God gives me greater freedom and self-determinism-- and has put me on a path of greater healing, love and insight. There is paradoxically more life in the surrender, not less. I’m grateful to Michael Been for this song-- reminding us that there is life and care right there in the scary vulnerability.
