The First Noel

from Servant King by wade baynham

/

about

This old traditional English carol tells the story of Jesus the Messiah, the King of Israel, in simple straightforward prose. Many of us know the song by heart, and I know for me, that can sometimes be a hindrance to hearing the lyric and message with new ears.

I wanted to see if I could rewrite the chordal structure in a way that lent the song to the themes of this project-- the darkness and mystery of night, the struggle of poverty and uncertainty, being under the boot of a controlling empire, struggling with a vulnerable birth-- and also being strangely filled with hope and wonder. I moved the traditional chords into a minor key and tried to bring some delicacy and sparkle to the vocal and instrumentation. I hope the arrangement gives the song a down-to-earth feel that touches us in our difficulties and struggles, and opens room for us for space, hope and wonder as well.
