I only saw Mark Heard play live once back in the 80s, and within a year or so, he was gone. In college, a friend had loaned me a record of Mark’s where it was just him and an acoustic guitar, but I was not able to appreciate the depth of his songwriting and creativity until years later. I wanted to find a way to record this visionary song about Ezekiel’s Valley of Dry Bones in a contemplative, almost dreamy style to give a sonic backdrop for the story to unfold. I know the idea of resurrection sounds as crazy today as it did in Ezekiel or Jesus’ time, but there it is-- hope that God will raise the dead, like he did for Jesus.
