about

Billy Joel has written a number of much-loved songs that contain stories of the people that he’s been around or met in his life. I have never been much of a fisherman. I have relatives who have been, and I’ve been on a fishing boat once or twice, but again, this is not my personal experience. But I very much relate to the fears around an industry in peril, a way of life in question, and the difficulties of self-identification, self-respect and self-image that show up in this song. I have also always been drawn to the melody and music of this song. It feels like it captures the vastness and greatness of the ocean, weather and sky, and the people who work with them as their backdrop.
