The Color Green

about

I have wanted to cover this song for many years, but I wasn’t sure I could keep up with it musically. I have been a great fan of the actual color green and many of it’s shades and forms all my life; and the beauty and the strength of the images in this song have captivated me for decades. I also deeply resonate with a lot of celtic music, whether it’s en vogue or not at the moment. So, this year, I set off on the journey of learning the intricate melodies and rhythms on a number of different instruments to try to pull off a version of my own.

I realize that some may hear this song in the category of ‘christian music’ or ‘christian worship music,’ and I get that. But I haven’t recorded this to add to a catalogue of sentimental, sappy, us-them songs designed to make some people feel good who are ‘on the right team’ or somehow have found ‘favor with god.’ That kind of thing honestly makes me nauseated.

For me, this song is simply an updated version of Jesus saying in Luke that if the people didn’t recognize him for who He was, the stones themselves would cry out-- that if we have ears to hear, and eyes to see, the color green can be an almost constant reminder that God is alive and moving, desperate to interact with us and our world, and that He is in no way finished with what He has started. With all of the pain and suffering that are all-too real in this world, there is also another story that God is weaving all around us and in us, available to any who want to join in.
