about

I really enjoyed this song when it came out during my high school years. My dad had a cassette of the album in his car, and I got to listen to the song when I got to drive it; I sung along, as loudly as I could. When I got to college, the singing group I was in my freshman year covered the song; and many nights, I got to sing lead.
It wasn’t until I was working on this recording project that it occured to me that you can read the song as more than a sad breakup song. I was in the shower humming it to myself one day, and realized that it was also the story of ego death, or the soul’s descent-- where we are sailing ‘south’ to get away from our hurt and pain, but where love ‘cannot be forgotten,’ and will always find a way to make itself known. There are ‘larger voices calling’ and I believe the writer is asking us to heed the call-- to live into Life, where love and hope are possible, even in and through our greatest ‘failures’ and ‘defeats.’
