I wrote this song in early May of 2020. The pandemic was in full swing, and the staggering ‘need’ for haircuts no matter what the cost, and for armed extremists to threaten and bully state legislators was in the news daily. I was, and am still having a very hard time understanding how some have responded to this world-wide pandemic, and contributed to so many dying needlessly. The desperate and ongoing fight of white religious fundamentalists and other white supremacists to ‘hold on’ and ‘protect’ their ‘way of life’ has shown itself to be a significant foe of democracy, the rule of law and the future of humankind. See Jan 6, ‘21.
I am, at the same time, very grateful to the people who have cared for their neighbors in a myriad of tangible ways; who have not resorted to violence, but have gotten on with healing, caring and peacekeeping.
lyrics
I’m not sure what to say, my friends
Words fail me and my explanations are weak
I’ve seen evil walk among us like business as usual
While we’re falling sick and met with disdain
And we’re dying to a familiar refrain
Sung by a wealthy tyrant fanning the flames
Chorus: This isn’t the first time, but it’s happening now
It may not be the last time, but I pray for the day when it will be
We’re lost and we’ve left compassion and mercy
We’ve left them for the love of power and money
Men with guns are invading our capitals
If they weren’t white, they’d be dead as we speak
While the wealthy pay for brainwashing to spur them on
Telling them to fight for freedom with armed insanity
When their only complaint is their bind of common humanity
Being asked to protect the lives of their community
Chorus:
Bridge: But I see you as you stay at home
You’re waiting, you’re watching and you’re hoping
Keeping your neighbor safe
And I see you on the front lines
Feeding, healing and delivering
Chorus:
