It Is Well With My Soul

about

How can it be ‘well with my soul’ whether things are good, or horrible in my life? This old hymn asks us to enter into a faith in a God who is not at all the author of a ‘prosperity gospel’ where good times, wealth and health accompany belief-- but in a God who somehow, even beyond our understanding, is suffering alongside us, having experienced our human hurts and brokenness, and who also is never asleep at the switch, but ceaselessly working for new life and new creation and renewal.

I can be honest and say that I have too many days where it does not feel like things are going well with me, and I can’t fathom how things are going to go well for humankind. This is a constant leap of faith for me, to know that the person I follow, Jesus, is not dead, but alive-- despite the fact that I have never seen him, and that He is right now at work in the mess and the mud and the brokenness and the abuse and the corruption of this world. And He is working to ‘turn the world around.’ I want to be a part of that-- God give me what I need to be a part of that.
