Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves

about

This radio hit was familiar to me as a young kid in Chicago, listening to a friend’s jukebox and the radio. It wasn’t until the ‘Wrecking Crew’ movie and soundtrack re-introduced it to me that it began to cruise around the front of my conscious again. I had also become aware of the plight of the Romani people in recent years. As I considered people whose story was different than mine, but whose difficulties resonated with me, this song began to make sense for this project. I didn’t know if I could record it honestly, but it began as an experiment to see if I could believe my own voice. I realized it was important to me to sing it in the female voice of the storyteller-- and it hurt to sing these lyrics and sit with the difficult circumstances and emotions of the songwriter. It made me grateful to find a way to be with, and in my own way come alongside this story.
