Dust in the Wind

about

I have tried to sing along with this song since I was a kid, while listening to the radio in awe of the guitars, vocals and violins. I am reminded of the line from funeral liturgies that quotes the Bible: ‘Dust to dust and ashes to ashes.’ It’s very humbling for me to try to wrap my mind around how quickly our lives pass in the movement of history. I think that greater awareness and acceptance of this reality-- as hard as it can be, helps me keep my own life in a more healthy perspective. And, counter intuitively, I am freed up by sitting with this reality, and feeling this honest lament. I can then participate with life and love and growth and renewal and rebirth, just for now-- just for the moment I’m in, without knowing the 'outcome.' I can also look to movements larger than myself, and keep growing, with the sense that my life and my participation have value… each of us is valuable.
