Dixie Storms

about

I lived in California for a number of years for college and for many years after. I think I remember one thunderstorm in 13 years. But that is where I was introduced to this song by Maria McKee and Lone Justice. I understood that the song was someone singing about the way that we all may lose touch with our past, and that we may even want to deny parts of it. But thunderstorms, our families and the past are real, and they have somehow made their way into our very marrow, for better and for worse. Sometimes it takes something like a thunderstorm to remind us of what we’re missing, or what we’ve run away from, or what we need to reconcile with.
I want to make peace with those things in my life-- to work towards healing the broken and dysfunctional places in me, and find gratitude for my story, my family and my life. I also want to name and acknowledge the hurts, difficulties and damage. This song helps me with that in the story of family, and the thunderstorms of ‘home;’ and I think it’s simply beautiful too.
