Fear and violence are connected in ways that I am realizing more and more every day. I see it in me, and I see it all around me. This is another song where Bruce Springsteen tells the story of some of our veterans-- this time from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s nearly impossible for us to imagine or envision why Jesus says ‘Blessed are the peacemakers,’ when our culture and many other cultures of history have lived and died by other rules-- namely, only the strong and violent survive. The rule where ‘peace’ is only attained through violence.
I am very thankful for a song where the storyteller says ‘Fear’s a dangerous thing; it will turn your heart black you can trust; it will take your God-filled soul, fill it with devils and dust.’ I want to heed the warning, and be open to exploring other ways of being and living together, where love is the goal.
