I heard Bruce Springsteen mention in an interview or song introduction that while he appreciated people helping ‘put his kids through college’ by buying this song, they ‘didn’t get it.’ That’s understandable. The song is NOT for the faint of heart. I heard this acoustic, blues-based version of his and I was blown away. I finally started to get it myself. The story of the Viet Nam vet in this song just jumped up and grabbed me like never before. I’ve known some vets, and while this is not the story of every vet’s story, I know that it’s sadly an all-too familiar story-- for the many brave, poor and uneducated people who have always fought the wars of empires. It is a brutal story, and one that I find worth telling again.
